TITLE

Recommendation to approve the 2017 Office of Sustainability Work Plan; and receive and file the Sustainable City Commission Policy Priorities for 2017. (Citywide)

DISCUSSION

The Sustainable City Commission Ordinance was adopted by a unanimous vote of the City Council on May 15, 2007.  This Ordinance established the Sustainable City Commission (Commission), requiring that, “Each year the Commission shall prepare a work program outlining the focus for the Commission for review and approval by the City Council.”

The attached 2017 Office of Sustainability Work Plan (Work Plan) was unanimously approved by the Commission on October 27, 2016.  The Work Plan includes multiple actions to be taken during the 2017 calendar year.  These actions are consistent with the Commission’s seven focus areas of Buildings & Neighborhoods, Energy & Climate, Green Economy & Lifestyle, Transportation, Urban Nature, Waste Reduction, and Water.  These focus areas provide a holistic approach to sustainability and will be used to guide the Office of Sustainability in its work.  In accordance with the Ordinance, the attached Work Plan is provided for City Council’s approval.

To support the actions outlined in the Work Plan, the Commission has also submitted a letter addressing the Sustainable City Commission’s Policy Priorities for 2017. The letter provides greater insight into the increased attendance of public participation at Commission meetings and the influence participation has had on sustainability goals and priorities for the coming year. The attached letter and supporting documents are provided for City Council’s review.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Linda T. Vu on November 10, 2016 and by Budget Analysis Officer Julissa Jose-Murray on November 14, 2016.

The Work Plan is intended to guide the Commission and City staff in creating green projects, programs and policies, and making recommendations to the City Council over the next year.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
