TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager to approve the donation of a surplus lawnmower (unit No. 14185) and a sweeper (unit No. 14027) to the Long Beach Unified School District.  (Citywide)

DISCUSSION
On August 20, 2008, the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) submitted a request for the donation of surplus lawn mowers and other field maintenance equipment for their Polytechnic High School (Poly) campus. Poly's fields are utilized for LBUSD events, as well as for Long Beach Youth Football, Long Beach Junior Athletic Football, the American Legion Baseball League, and other community events. The additional equipment would reduce LBUSD's staff time and costs to perform required field maintenance.

Due to contracting out the City's median maintenance program in October 2004, the City was able to donate three surplus mowers to LBUSD in late 2005. The City currently has a surplus lawnmower and a sweeper (unit numbers 14185 and 14027, respectively) available for donation.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Gary J. Anderson on October 29, 2008, and Budget and Performance Management Manager Dave Wodynski on October 30, 2008.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on November 18, 2008, to ensure that LBUSD receives the equipment for the immediate needs of Poly High School.

FISCAL IMPACT
There is no fiscal impact associated with the requested action. These units have a combined salvage value of approximately $3,000.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
