TITLE

Recommendation to receive and file a report from City Manager on the status of the citywide coordinated effort around the prevention and enforcement of illegal fireworks in Long Beach before and after the 4th of July holiday.

DISCUSSION

Each year on the 4th of July in the U.S., thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks. The risk of fireworks injury is highest for young people ages 0-4, followed by youth ages 10-14. In addition, on July 4th in a typical year, far more U.S. fires are reported than on any other day, and fireworks account for two out of five of those fires, more than any other cause of fires.

Over the past few years, the amount of illegal fireworks being used in the City of Long Beach has increased. Council offices have had a rise in constituent calls, and last year's 4th of July was extremely heavy on complaints and concems from residents.

This recommendation is being requested to hear a report on the status of the citywide efforts in place to combat the use of illegal fireworks in Long Beach.

FISCAL IMPACT

There is no fiscal impact to receive and file this report.
