DISCUSSION

The City of Long Beach Police Department (PD) was recently awarded the FY 15 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program (Coverdell 15) grant in the amount of $8,780.  The grant monies will be used to provide training to improve the skill level and efficiency of Forensic Science Services Division staff, who analyze crime scenes and evidence in support of investigations.  The grant term is October 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Monica J. Kilaita on April 12, 2016, and by Budget Management Officer Victoria Bell on April 13, 2016.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS

City Council action on this item is requested on May 3, 2016, to expedite the use of grant funds.

FISCAL IMPACT

An appropriations increase in the amount of $8,780 is requested in the General Grants Fund (SR 120) in the Police Department (PD) and is included in the recommendation.  Grant revenues will offset the expense appropriation and the grant does not require any matching funds.  There is no local job impact associated with this recommendation.
