TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to draft an ordinance prohibiting the use of electronically motorized boards as defined in Vehicle Code Section 313.5 from operating on sidewalks in business corridors.
DISCUSSION
Electronic motorized boards, also known as Hoverboards have become a popular mode of transportation over the past several months. Recent state laws have been established around Hoverboard operation requiring as of January 1, 2016 riders to be at least sixteen years old, wearing a helmet, and riding only on streets where the speed limit is under 35 MPH. As bicycles, roller-skates/blades, and skateboards are already prohibited on Long Beach commercial sidewalks, including Hoverboards in this restriction would help ensure safety for Hoverboard riders as well as pedestrians.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no significant fiscal impact with the drafting of this ordinance.
SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
