TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to draft a resolution in support of President Barack Obama's executive actions to reduce gun violence and make our communities safer.

DISCUSSION
On Tuesday, January 5th President Sarack Obama presented his Executive Action on his plan to fight the tragic gun violence that is happening across American communities. He presented distinct ways for preventative measures to reduce gun violence in all of our neighborhoods.

Gun Violence in America Statistics:

• More than 30,000 gun deaths occur in America each year

• More than 20,000 children under the age of 18 are killed by firearms over the last decade

• In 2014, more than 1,800 children under 18 were killed by a firearm

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LONG BEACH TO SUPPORT PRESIDENT OBAMA'S EXECUTIVE ACTIONS TO REDUCE GUN VIOLENCE

WHEREAS, In 2014 the City of Long Beach had the lowest violent crime rate in 42 years, but there are still too many residents who are victims of gun violence. Reflecting a statewide and national trend Long Beach saw an increase in violent crimes in 2015. In 2015 there were nearly 300 shootings that were reported.

WHEREAS, President Obama's Executive Action to reduce gun violence include three main actions; and

• The first action is to keep guns out of the wrong hands through backgrounds checks that would include: The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is making clear that it doesn't matter where you conduct your business-from a store, at gun shows, or over the Internet: If you're in the business of selling firearms, you must get a license and conduct background checks.
