TITLE

WITHDRAWN

Recommendation that the City Council direct City Manager to work with the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce to participate in the 122nd Inaugural Gala event and to graciously accept the award.

DISCUSSION

The Long Beach Chamber of Commerce has announced that it will hold its 122nd Inaugural Gala on Thursday, June 2ih at 6:30 pm at the Long Beach Convention Center - Grand Ball Room. During this event, it will honor the Long Beach Airport with the "2013 Destination Tomorrow Award." It will also honor Aeroplex, Boeing, Jet Blue and UPS with the "2013 Long Beach Aviation Partners" industry award.

In the past the Chamber has honored the Long Beach Port.

The honor comes at no cost to the City and will generate a tremendous opportunity to showcase the improvements at the Long Beach Municipal Airport and the contributions of our aviation partners.

The Chamber will also feature the Long Beach Municipal Airport in several publications and video presentations.

This is a fitting honor for our airport during its 90th Anniversary and to celebrate our new terminal and the improvements.

It is also fitting since the history of Long Beach and its connection with aviation was strongly supported by the Long Beach Chamber when it sponsored a Long Beach Day at the first International Air Meet over at Dominguez Hills in 1910. Months later, it was the Chamber that offered Cal Rodgers $5,000 to end his transcontinental flight in Long Beach instead of Santa Monica in 1911. As a result, Long Beach is the terminus for the first transcontinental flight ever completed in the U.S. and a landmark in aviation history.

The Chamber has approached the City to accept this honor at the June 2ih event but apparently there has been no interest in participating.

FISCAL IMPACT

None.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,
