TITLE

Recommendation to respectfully request City Manager to work with appropriate staff to brief and receive feedback from the City Council on proposed Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) changes to Long Beach Airport (LGB) airspace.

DISCUSSION

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) serves as the governing body for airspace and uses therein. The FAA is currently considering changes to local airspace designations that could impact Long Beach Airport (LGB) operations. Potential changes center around the designation of local airspace as "Class C" which would require pilots to clear operations with the Southern California Terminal Radar Approach Control Facility.

While this change could have a potential positive effect on safety, several communities are concerned that it will lead to unintended consequences of noise and pollution over neighborhoods. As an issue that may potentially impact airport operations and local quality of life, it is appropriate that the Council receive an update on FAA airspace efforts.

FISCAL IMPACT

None.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,
