TITLE
Recommendation to designate Alison King as the Acting Deputy Executive Director of the Housing Authority of the City of Long Beach, effective as of December 9, 2015. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
Pursuant to the Housing Authority Law of the State of California and the United States Housing Act, the Housing Authority of the City of Long Beach (Housing Authority) was established in 1968 as a separate and distinct public body from the City of Long Beach. The Housing Authority is currently funded to serve over 7,500 low-income families in the Long Beach area with a budget of over $75 million.
The Bylaws of the Housing Authority (Resolution No. H.A. 1-69) designate certain City Councilmembers and City officials to act as officers (Resolution No. H.A. 2-77, as amended by Resolution H.A. 8-77) of the Housing Authority who are charged with various duties and powers.
The Bylaws of the Housing Authority establish that the Deputy Secretary of the Authority shall be the Housing Director of the City of Long Beach, and shall serve as the Deputy Executive Director of the Housing Authority. The current Deputy Executive Director of the Housing Authority, Darnisa Tyler, is retiring. Therefore, this position, which is responsible for daily operations of the Housing Authority, will need to be immediately filled in the interim until a permanent replacement is designated.
This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Linda Vu on November 18, 2015, and by Assistant Finance Director Lea Eriksen on November 19, 2015.
TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
Housing Authority Commission action is requested at this time as the retirement date of the current Deputy Executive Director is December 30, 2015.
