DISCUSSION
The City of Long Beach Police Department (PD) was recently awarded the FY 14 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Program (Coverdell 14) grant in the amount of $8,761. Grant monies will be used to provide training to improve the skill level and efficiency of Forensic Science Division staff, who analyze crime scenes and evidence in support of investigations. The grant term is October 1, 2014 through August 31, 2015.

This item was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Kendra Carney on February 17, 2015,  and by Budget Management Officer Victoria Bell on February 18, 2015.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action on this item is requested on March 10, 2015, to expedite use of the grant funds.

FISCAL IMPACT
The City has received the Coverdell 14 grant in the amount of $8,761. As this funding is currently unbudgeted, an appropriation increase in the General Grants Fund (SR 120) in the PD is included in the recommendation. Grant revenues will offset the expense appropriation and the grant does not require any matching funds. There is no local job impact associated with this recommendation.

SUGGESTED ACTION
