TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager to execute all necessary documents to receive and expend grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety for the 2009 DUI Enforcement and Awareness Program; and increase appropriations in the General Grants Fund (SR) and in the Police Department (PD) by $235,295. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
In June 2008, the Long Beach Police Department received the 2009 DUI Enforcement and Awareness Program grant for $235,295 from the California Office of Traffic Safety. The goal of the grant is to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes. The program will support checkpoints, saturation patrols, and sting operations. The program will also support the development of a program to notify patrol and traffic officers to be on the lookout for identified repeat DUI offenders with suspended or revoked licenses as a result of DUI convictions, and raising community awareness. To utilize these grant funds, an appropriation increase is necessary. There is no impact to the General Fund.
This item was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Gary Anderson on June 24, 2008 and Budget Management Officer Victoria Bell on June 26, 2008.
TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action on this matter is requested on July 22, 2008, to expedite use of the grant funds.
FISCAL IMPACT
The DUI Enforcement and Awareness Program grant is currently unbudgeted; therefore, an appropriation increase is included in the recommendation. The expense appropriation will be offset by grant revenues and the grant does not require any matching funds. Grant funds will help defray the overall cost of police overtime otherwise supported by the General Fund.
