TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to prepare an amendment to the Long Beach Municipal Code, Section 10.12.010, relating to the 30 miles per hour speed limit on Walnut Avenue, between Wardlow Road and Carson Street, as recommended by the City Traffic Engineer. (District 7)

DISCUSSION
In response to resident concerns about commuters short-cutting and speeding in the California Heights neighborhood, City traffic engineers conducted an Engineering and Traffic Survey on Walnut Avenue, between Wardlow Road and Carson Street. The Engineering and Traffic Survey is the official document of record that is used for the establishment of speed limits, and it also provides justification for the use of radar to enforce said speed limits.

This street segment is highlighted on the attached vicinity map.

We request that the City Attorney be authorized to prepare an amendment to Section 10.12.010 of the Long Beach Municipal Code, as listed below:

1. Subsection 58, referring to speed limits on Walnut Avenue, by modifying paragraph “c” to read as follows:

“c. Carson Street to the City limits near Wardlow Road, twenty-five (25) miles per hour,”

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Amy R. Webber on September 9, 2014 and by Budget Management Officer Victoria Bell on September 17, 2014.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
Council action on this matter is not time critical.
