TITLE
Recommendation to request City Manager to provide a report to the City Council within 60 days on the status of the Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee, an overview of the City's school crossing guard program, including how many and where crossing guards are currently deployed, and what the cost, as well as the City's overall efforts to ensure traffic safety in school zones.

DISCUSSION
The voters of Long Beach adopted an initiative ordinance in 1978 establishing criteria for designating school crossings as hazardous, and creating the Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee to oversee the installation of adult crossing guards at hazardous school crossings.

The Committee consists of one representative from each Council district, nominated by each respective councilmember, a representative of the Long Beach Unified School District, the City's Traffic Engineer, a representative of the nonpublic schools in the Long Beach area appointed by the City Manager, and the President of the Parent Teacher Association of Long Beach.

With the recent start of the new school year in Long Beach, and the inherent traffic problems around schools, it would be instructive for the City Council to receive an update on the current work of the Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee and the overall efforts of the City to work with the Long Beach Unified School District to ensure traffic safety in school zones throughout the City.
