DISCUSSION
The Long Beach Police Department was awarded grant funding for the tenth consecutive year for the Fiscal Year 2014 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program: Local Solicitation, from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance in the amount of $226,287. The grant monies will be used to support a specially trained and selected Deputy Probation Officer assigned by the County of Los Angeles to provide enhanced probation services to the City of Long Beach, and a DNA Criminalist provided by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department assigned to Long Beach DNA cases.
This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Kendra Carney on August 12, 2014 and by Budget Management Officer Victoria Bell on August 14, 2014.  
 
TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action on this matter is requested on September 16, 2014, to expedite use of the grant funds.
 
FISCAL IMPACT
As the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program is currently unbudgeted; therefore, an appropriation increase in the General Grants fund (SR 120) in the Police Department (PD) in the amount of $226,287 is included in the recommendation. Grant revenues will offset the expense appropriation and the grant does not require matching funds. There is no local job impact associated with this recommendation.
