Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute an agreement and any subsequent amendments between the City of Long Beach and The Earl B. and Loraine H. DISCUSSION
The Earl B. and Loraine H. Miller Foundation (Miller Foundation) has awarded the City of Long Beach an $80,000 grant to support the Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) Childhood Obesity Prevention and Advocacy (COPA) Program to enhance its chronic disease prevention programming with an emphasis on health promotion and wellness.

Renewal of funding from the Miller Foundation builds upon a successful 2013-2014 grant period whereby the Health Department focused on citywide health promotion and wellness. This year’s funding will focus on increasing participants’ level of physical activity and knowledge of fitness, wellness, and nutrition in the Beach Community Wellness exercise program in partnership with the California State University, Long Beach Department of Kinesiology. In addition, funding will help the Health Department establish Learning Gardens to educate residents about healthy lifestyle choices and reduce the risk of obesity and other chronic diseases.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Richard F. Anthony on July 30, 2014 and by Budget Management Officer Victoria Bell on August 6, 2014.
