DISCUSSION
The PulsePoint CPR mobile app is an innovative tool that sends emergency alerts to individuals who have downloaded the app when someone near them needs Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). PulsePoint is linked to the Fire Department dispatch so emergency alerts are issued at the same time a dispatcher sends an alert to Fire and EMS crews. This ensures that an individual who needs CPR gets aid quickly.

Cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States. When an individual is in cardiac arrest, the most important thing needed to save their life is the quick administration of CPR. CPR can be administered by anyone trained to do so, and training is simple and accessible to the public. Individuals who receive CPR quickly have a much better rate of survival than those that do not. Quick intervention is essential in cardiac arrest cases, and more fire and emergency medical services (EMS) departments are turning to technology to get civilian responders to victims as quickly as possible, potentially before a paramedic can get to the victim. This system is used in various agencies throughout the country.

The Long Beach Fire Department has been testing the PulsePoint system to be made available in the near future.
