DISCUSSION

The City of Long Beach Police Department was recently awarded $14,915 grant funding from the State of California Governor's Office of Emergency Services Paul Coverdell Forensic Sciences Improvement Program grant.

The grant monies will be used to provide training to improve the skill level and efficiency of techniques used by the forensic staff, allowing them to improve the quality of services. Since training improves skill level and efficiency, employees are capable of working faster and with fewer errors, improving the timeliness of service. Equipment will be purchased to replace outdated and aged equipment allowing for more versatile testing.

The grant term is January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2008.

This item was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Gary Anderson on February 6, 2008 and Budget Management Officer Victoria Bell on March 3, 2008.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action on this matter is requested on March 11, 2008, to expedite use of the grant funds.

FISCAL IMPACT
There is no impact to the General Fund, and no City match is required.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,
