DISCUSSION
The Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network (Network) administers the federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and other employment and training funds received annually by the City. Those funds support job training programs and business services delivered by the Career Transition Center, Youth Opportunity Center, Center for Working Families, Harbor WorkSource Center, and selected community-based organizations to assist local residents acquire skills leading to employment in demand occupations by local employers.

The Network utilizes labor market information, industry feedback and trends to monitor hiring needs, and to ensure that local skill training design and investments lead to employment for residents. For most sponsored training programs not part of special initiatives connected with local colleges and universities, Network customers are required by the WIA to select training providers procured and approved through the State's Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL). Both the Workforce Investment Board's targeted initiative on industries affiliated with logistics, and the ongoing growth of the service sector and related office occupations are creating sizable demand for training through certain local providers on the ETPL. In the case of the local vendors below, projected expenditures over the 12-month calendar year are expected to exceed $95,000; therefore, approval for formal contracts is requested in anticipation of demand.
