DISCUSSION
The After School Education Safety (AES) Program is a collaboration between the City and the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), funded by the California Department of Education, which enables more elementary school children to participate in after school educational enrichment activities. LBUSD has allocated $1,380,267 of its AES funding to the City of Long Beach. The AES Program augments the ongoing Long Beach Winners Reaching Amazing Potential (LB WRAP) program at the eight school sites selected by LBUSD and listed above. The AES Program will fund program staffing, supervision, and administrative assistance through June 30, 2008. Funding for this program is immediately available from LBUSD upon execution of all documents.
Approximately 150,000 students per year will be served through the new LB WRAP program. The attached matrix (Attachment A) identifies the distribution of funds for each school site.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Gary J. Anderson on July 24, 2007, and Budget and Performance Management Bureau Manager David Wodynski on July 26,2007.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on August 7, 2007, to enable the increase in appropriations and to minimize interruption of AES Program activities.
