DISCUSSION
The County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services (County) has awarded the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) a grant in the amount of $983,720 for a period of two and one-half years to provide outreach, enrollment, retention and utilization (OERU) services to children and families who may be eligible for Healthy Kids, Medi-Cal, Healthy Families or other free or low-cost health care programs in the City of Long Beach (City). This new grant is funded by the OERU County allocation program from state general funds and matching Title XIX and Title XXI federal funds. The grant will enable the DHHS Medi-Cal Outreach Program to expand services currently provided under the County's Children's Healthy Outreach Initiative Program. The term of the new grant is March 1,2007 through June 30,2009.

As the lead agency for the City's Medi-Cal Outreach Program, the DHHS will continue to coordinate the citywide outreach campaign, conduct program activities, provide administrative support and ensure that the overall program objectives are met. DHHS staff will work with Medi-Cal Outreach collaborative agencies to increase access to health care by assisting children and their families in the City to enroll in health coverage programs to utilize and retain these benefits.
