TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager to execute all necessary documents to receive and expend grant funding from the University of California Berkeley Traffic Center administering the Sobriety Checkpoint Program funds for the California Office of Traffic Safety; and increase appropriations in the General Grants Fund (SR 120) and in the Police Department (PD) by $41,010. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
On September 29, 2006, the Long Beach Police Department received notification that it was awarded a $41,010 grant from the University of California Berkeley Traffic Center (TSC), which administers the Sobriety Checkpoint Program funds for the California Office of Traffic Safety. The grant will be used to support overtime associated with conducting six sobriety checkpoints in Long Beach during FY 07. The goal of the grant is to reduce the number of victims killed and injured in alcohol-involved crashes in cities participating in this program.
This item was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Richard Anthony on October 10, 2006 and Budget Management Officer David Wodynski on October 13, 2006.
TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action on this matter is requested on October 24, 2006, to expedite use of the grant funds.
FISCAL IMPACT
As these grant funds are currently unbudgeted, an appropriation increase is included in the recommendation. The expense appropriation will be offset by grant revenues. The grant does not require matching funds. Grant funds will be used to support overtime required to implement the Checkpoint 07 program. There is no impact to the General Fund.
