TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file a presentation from the Port of Long Beach regarding the 2005 Green Port Annual Report.

DISCUSSION
The Port of Long Beach recently submitted the 2005 Green Port Annual Report
on the achievements, progress and upcoming activities of the Green Port Policy
to the City of Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners. The Green Port
Policy focuses on six key areas: wildlife, air, water, soil and sediments,
community engagement and sustainability.

As noted in this report, the Green Port Policy supplants the Port of Long Beach's
2002 Healthy Harbor program. While significant, this original program lacked a
unified policy and a clear statement of the environmental ethic needed to guide
the Port's development and operations.

As the Port of Long Beach has experienced rapid trade growth in recent years,
and is projected to nearly triple in the next 15 years, the Board of Harbor
Commissioners directed Port staff to develop a new and improved policy to
reduce the negative impacts of Port operations on the health and environment of
the surrounding communities. This Green Port Policy, which the Board adopted
in January 2005, serves as a guide for port-wide decision making and
established a framework for environmentally friendly Port operations.

As one of the Councilmembers representing this important portion of our City, I
respectfully request that we have representatives from the Harbor Department
come to the City Council meeting on June 20, 2006, and give a brief presentation
about the Green Port Policy.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,
