DISCUSSION
Recently, the City was awarded two grants by the Long Beach Navy Memorial Heritage Association (Association). The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine was awarded $50,000 for the reconstruction of the historic decorative wooden arbors that once flanked the Recreation Park Band Shell. The Department of Planning and Building was awarded $29,800 to begin Phase 1 of a multi-phase historic resources survey of the City. Phase 1 includes the development of a citywide historic context statement.

Created in 1998, the Association’s mission is to preserve the heritage and historic sites of Long Beach, recognize the contributions of the Long Beach Naval Station and Shipyard to the City of Long Beach, and honor the works of architect Paul Revere Williams. Project funding was very competitive as only $165,100 was available for grant awards this year.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on April 18, 2006, to execute the grant agreements in a timely manner to begin the projects.
