TITLE
Recommendation to request City Manager to begin the process of organizing a Fourth of July fireworks show for 2006 off our City
shoreline.

DISCUSSION
This year's cancellation of the downtown Fourth of July fireworks show was a
disappointment for our community, our businesses that benefit from the event,
and for the image that we portray to visitors of our city.

The annual fireworks program has been a Long Beach tradition for the last two
decades. It is unfortunate that the city and the Queen Mary could not come to an
agreement about the cost of public safety fees. We need to start now to explore
ways to bring back the Fourth of July fireworks show in 2006 and beyond.

If we cannot find a solution with the Queen Mary, or corporate sponsors, then we
would like to move towards a city-sponsored Fourth of July fireworks show. The
cost to Long Beach is well worth the benefits to our local economy, community
patriotism, and city image. We owe it to our citizens and businesses.
