DISCUSSION
Since 1984, at the request of the Police Department, the Department of Health and Human
Services (DHHS) has been coordinating the jail medical services program. This involves
administering operational agreements with local physicians and hospitals to ensure
required medical services to inmates of the Long Beach City Jail. During the past 19
years, the DHHS has provided State-mandated jail health, sexual assault and in-custody
medical services utilizing several service agreements.

The current contract with Community Hospital of Long Beach expired on April 30, 2005.
Given the quality, reliability and costs of the services provided, the DHHS is requesting to
renew the agreement with Community Hospital of Long Beach for the next 12-month period
for an amount not to exceed $300,000. This amount reflects the current costs needed to
provide these services.

This matter was reviewed by Senior Deputy City Attorney Donna Gwin on June 2,2005
and by Budget Management Officer David Wodynski on June 1,2005

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS

Jail Inmates.
