TITLE
Recommendation to increase appropriations in the Gas Tax Street Improvement Fund (SR 181) by $500,000 and in the Capital Projects Fund (CP) by $200,000 in the Department of Public Works (PW), for additional street and roof repairs related to recent rainstorms; and authorize City Manager to execute the Second Amendment to Contract No. 28590 with Sully-Miller Contracting Company to increase the contract authority by $1,000,000, for a total cumulative contract amount of $9,500,000. DISCUSSION
The severe rainstorms experienced from December 28, 2004, through January 14
2005 , resulted in approximately $3. 7 million in damages to the City of Long Beach. A
portion of this damage was highly visible in the form of damaged traffic signals , an
estimated 172 fallen street trees and over 3 000 potholes. Additionally, numerous City
buildings experienced roof leaks and water damage.
The recovery plan initiated by the Department of Public Works includes street and
facilities repair and tree replacement costs that are not funded within the Department's
current FY 05 budget. As indicated during the storm damage update provided to the
City Council on January 18, 2005 , the recovery plan proposes to utilize the
Infrastructure Reserve to fund portion of the cost for needed street repair, tree
replacement and critical building repair. To continue implementation of this recovery
plan , the City Council is being requested to appropriate $700 000 of available funding;
$500 000 will be used for additional needed street repairs , primarily for sinkholes and
potholes that are continuing to occur citywide , with no additional tree replacement, and
$200 000 for additional roof repairs.
In order to expedite the needed storm-related street repairs , staff has been utilizing the
City on-call contract with Sully-Miller Contracting Company. Since the original
