TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager to execute all documents associated with a new grant award of $800,000 for the Greater Long Beach Healthcare Collaborative Project to increase the number of healthcare professionals in the local area; authorize City Manager to execute contract with Long Beach Memorial Medical Center for $80,000 and Long Beach Community College District for $456,849 to provide educational and related activities for the period of March 1, 2005 through March 31, 2007, and any subsequent time-only extensions necessary to complete the project; and increase appropriations by $800,000 in Community Development Grants Fund (SR 150) and in Department of Community Development (CD). DISCUSSION
In November 2004, the State Employment Development Department announced the availability of funds through a Solicitation for Proposals (SFP) for training of nurses and other healthcare professionals in California. The City s Workforce Development Bureau collaborated with local healthcare employers and higher education institutions on a proposal in response to that solicitation. In a press release on March 18, 2005, the Governor announced that Long Beach was one of 18 awardees statewide to receive a grant of $800 000. The Greater Long Beach Healthcare Collaborative Project expands the current Nurse
Workforce Initiative and is designed to increase retention rates in the Long Beach Community College District's (LBCCD) Associate Degree Nursing Program , expand enrollment in the Radiologist Technology Program , and implement a new education program for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists. At a minimum , the Project will train 5 Radiology Technicians , 10 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists , and advance 48 students in the Nursing Program to completion of an Associate Degree in Nursing and assist them with passing the Registered Nurse Board exams.
