TITLE
Recommendation to adopt resolution designating the Terminal Island Freeway between Pacific Coast Highway and Willow Street as an overweight vehicle route. (District 7)

DISCUSSION
The Department of Public Works has received a request from the Harbor Department to designate the Terminal Island Freeway between Pacific Coast Highway and Willow Street
as an overweight vehicle route. This portion of the Terminal Island Freeway was relinquished from the State of California to the City of Long Beach in August 2000, and prior to the relinquishment, was designated as an overweight vehicle route by the State of
California. The Terminal Island Freeway is a key link in a network of overweight truck routes between the Port of Long Beach and Sepulveda Boulevard in the City of Los Angeles. Staff is, therefore, recommending the designation of the Terminal Island
Freeway between Pacific Coast Highway and Willow Street as an overweight vehicle route in accordance with Section 10.41.030 of the Long Beach Municipal Code. In accordance with Section 35700.5 of the California Vehicle Code, the overweight truck
corridor has been extended several times in both the City and Port of Long Beach. A similar system has also been established on sections of State Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) and adjoining streets in the City of Los Angeles. These routes serve as key
transportation corridors for the movement of freight that cannot be accommodated by standard weight vehicles. Approval of this resolution will not change the ban on trucks traveling eastbound on Willow Street between the Terminal Island Freeway and the 1-710
Freeway. The above-mentioned location is highlighted on the attached map This letter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Lisa Peskay Malmsten on March 9, 2005, and Douglas Thiessen, Chief Harbor Engineer, on December 29,2004.
