DISCUSSION
Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, South Bay (Kaiser) has awarded the City of Long Beach a $10,000 grant to support the development of a Community Health Learning Garden to enhance current health promotion programming and support Kaiser’s emphasis on obesity and overweight prevention.

The Health Department and Kaiser have a successful history of working together to implement activities and initiatives that create healthier environments for Long Beach residents. With this current planning grant, the Health Department will develop plans for a learning garden that will educate community members about healthy lifestyle choices and, in turn, reduce the risk of obesity and other chronic diseases. The learning garden curriculum will act as a teaching tool for the Health Department to demonstrate how to grow fresh produce, to improve community members’ dietary intake and to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Specifically, the funding will support the creation of a Garden Planning Committee, the design of the garden and planting schedule, a Health Department garden curriculum, and an implementation plan. The Health Department will then be eligible to apply for additional funding from Kaiser during the next grant cycle to implement the learning garden program.
