DISCUSSION
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has approved the Long Beach Fire and Police Departments’ grant proposals for the 2013 Port Security Grant Program (PSGP) for a total of $584,970 (pre-cost match). The grant priorities focus on infrastructure protection and reflect the DHS overall investment strategy, in which two priorities have been paramount: risk-based funding and regional security cooperation. PSGP funds support increased port-wide risk management; enhanced domain awareness, training and exercise, and further capabilities to prevent, detect, respond to and recover from attacks involving improvised explosive devices (IED) and other non-conventional weapons. This grant requires, and the Port of Long Beach has agreed to provide, the necessary cost match to reimburse the Fire and Police Departments 25 percent of their total expenses made under this program.

Approved projects for the Fire Department total $209,000 (of which $52,250 is from the Port cost match), and will be used to fund the purchase of night vision devices for nighttime on-water operations and Hazardous Materials and CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives) detection and telemetry equipment to be installed on the new fireboats.
