TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to draft a resolution in support of the completion of the I-710 Freeway extension.
DISCUSSION
The Long Beach Freeway (1-710) is a vital transportation artery, linking the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles to major Southern California distribution centers and intermodal rail facilities. An essential component of the regional, statewide and national transportation system, it serves both passenger and goods movement vehicles.
As a result of population growth, increased cargo container volume at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, increasing traffic volumes, and an aging infrastructure, the 1-710 Freeway experiences serious congestion and safety issues.
There is no North/South freeway to connect the 1-10, the 1-210, and the SR 110 where 20% of the entire population of the Los Angeles County lives. The 1-710 extension is a critical part of the freeway system and the last gap to be closed in the Los Angeles County.
This resolution will demonstrate that the City Council of the City of Long Beach, California supports completion of closing the 4.5-mile gap in the Interstate 710 Freeway corridor.
