DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to enter in an annual contract with Regimed Medical, for the purchase of vaccines that the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) provides for communicable disease and travel vaccines in its Immunization and Travel Clinics. These vaccinations are essential to ensure the control of communicable diseases in the community. Travel vaccinations are often required for international travelers to protect them from acquiring diseases that are prevalent in certain parts of the world, and also to protect the community by preventing the spread of diseases from other countries. As one of the largest travel clinics in Southern California, the DHHS receives numerous referrals from physicians throughout the region, and charges patient fees that cover the cost of providing these services.

The bid was advertised in the Press-Telegram on January 24, 2013, and 610 potential bidders specializing in drugs and pharmaceuticals were notified of the bid opportunity. Of those bidders, 16 downloaded the bid via our electronic bid system. The bid document was made available from the Purchasing Division, located on the seventh floor of City Hall, and the Division’s website at www.longbeach.gov/purchasing . A bid announcement was also included in the Purchasing Division’s weekly update of Open Bid Opportunities, which is sent to 30 local, minority and women-owned business groups.
