DISCUSSION
On June 4, 2012, the Department of Development Services was awarded a Community Benefit Grant in the amount of $15,000 from Kaiser Permanente (Kaiser). Kaiser seeks to improve the health and safety of communities they serve. The grant is a one-year grant beginning on July 1, 2012, and ending on June 30, 2013. There is no in-kind match requirement for this grant.

On July 5, 2011, the City Council voted to request the preparation of a comprehensive Citywide Violence Prevention Plan (VPP). On June 12, 2012, the City Council voted to accept a grant from the California Endowment to prepare the VPP. The Kaiser grant funding will be used for further development of the City’s VPP, specifically to conduct a community survey that complements the overall VPP workplan. With the support of these Community Benefit Grant funds, the survey will provide an in-depth look at the needs and perceptions of community residents as they relate to safety at parks and schools.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Richard Anthony on July 2, 2012 and Budget Management Officer Victoria Bell on July 6, 2012.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on July 24, 2012 to allow swift implementation of the Community Benefit grant activities.
