TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file report on Councilmember Garcia's trip to San Francisco, California, February 2012.

DISCUSSION
In February 2012 I traveled to San Francisco for a weekend to participate in the National Association of Latino Elected Officials' National Policy Institute on Building Healthy Communities. The Conference provided opportunities to gather important, timely information on the efforts of policy-makers and health advocates to craft legislation and policies that support the health of our communities. The costs of travel and accommodations were covered by a scholarship from NALEO, a nonprofit organization.

NALEO has been a driving force behind national efforts to respond to our health cnSIS, including the obesity epidemic, through improved policies addressing everything from land use and budgetary priorities to educational outreach and recreation opportunities. NALEO's work and advocacy in these areas has helped inform the important ongoing efforts by the City of Long Beach to craft policies that support a healthy, active lifestyle in our City. The weekend's conference offered information and relationships that will continue to enhance those efforts.
