TITLE
Recommendation to request City Manager work with the City Attorney to draft a statement of solidarity with the women of Iran who are protesting their government in light of the killing of Masha Amini.
DISCUSSION
Over the past weeks the people of Iran, particularly women and girls have taken to the streets to protest their government and the tragic death of Masha Amini on Friday September 16, 2022. She died while in government custody after being arrested by the government’s Morality Police for the crime of being a woman in public without a headscarf. Her death has sparked protests across the world as Iranians as well as those who support civil rights, speak out against the oppression of women. Now amidst widespread protests the Iranian government has killed a second young woman, Sarina Esmaeilzadeh. She was beaten to death in the streets while protesting on September 22, 2022.
As we see demonstrations being held locally here in Long Beach it is important that we lend our voices in support of women’s equality and stand up against governments who seek to control women in every facet of their lives, including what we wear. Therefore, it is necessary for Long Beach to issue a statement of solidarity.
Peaceful protests are at the heart of advocating for human rights and freedoms, and the City of Long Beach strongly advocates for ending all violence and oppression against women in all its forms. The City of Long Beach recognizes the tremendous courage of the women of Iran and stands in solidarity with each and every woman all around the world seeking to speak out and protect their human rights and freedoms.
STATEMENT OF URGENCY:
As protests and demonstrations spread around the world it is important the Long Beach speak out on this issue of women’s freedom.

No Financial Management review was able to be conducted due to the urgency and time sensitivity of this item.
