TITLE
Recommendation to respectfully request City Manager to coordinate with the County of Los Angeles to participate in the Los Angeles County Online Materials Exchange Program, and encourage local residents, businesses, and organizations to both post and reuse items from the Online Materials Exchange.
DISCUSSION
In order to promote the reuse of products that may otherwise be headed for landfills or incinerators, I would like to recommend that the City of Long Beach actively participate in the Los Angeles County Online Materials Exchange, and encourage Long Beach residents, businesses and organizations to do the same.
The Los Angeles County Online Materials Exchange is an online materials exchange program developed and operated by the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Environmental Programs Division as an environmentally friendly alternative to disposing of unwanted but usable goods. Such reuse benefits the local community by allowing residents, businesses, schools, and nonprofits to give away or acquire products with considerably less impact to our natural resources.
The City of Long Beach conducts regular cleanups in which salvageable goods are occasionally thrown out. Instead, these goods should be given the opportunity for a second life. Also, with the recently adopted Construction and Demolition Ordinance, the City has an opportunity to provide for the reuse of significant amounts of building materials.
TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
None.
FISCAL IMPACT
None.
SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
Respectfully Submitted,
Bonnie Lowenthal, Vice Mayor
