TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file report on travel to Washington, D.C. with the Federal Legislation Committee.
DISCUSSION
On March 26-28, 2007, the full Federal Legislation Committee of the Long Beach City Council traveled to Washington, D.C. to share the City's adopted 2007 Federal Legislative Agenda and discuss federal issues of importance with our delegation and other members of Congress. The Committee was accompanied by the City's Government Affairs Manager, and the City's federal legislative representatives, Van Scoyoc Associates and E. Del Smith and Company.
Attached is a list of meetings the Committee held while back in Washington, D.C.
Among the issues discussed were the following:
o Funding for the City's Fiscal Year 2008 Appropriation Requests
o Homeland and Port Security funding and the recently passed House and Senate Authorization
bills
o Continued funding of the C-17 production line
o Transportation, goods movement, and air quality concerns
o Funding for Community Development Block Grant funding
o Other issues on the Federal Legislative Agenda
The trip was productive in maintaining strong personal connections with our federal representatives and communicating the City's legislative priorities. We will continue to closely monitor issues of federal importance and work with the City's government affairs staff and our federal legislative representatives to advance the City Council's 2007 federal legislative priorities.
SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
Respectfully Submitted,
Councilmember Gary DeLong, Third District, Chair, Federal Legislative Committee
Councilwoman Gerrie Schipski, Fifth District
