TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to draft a resolution in support of Proclaiming Long Beach a "Purple Heart City".
DISCUSSION
Chartered by Congress in 1958, the Military Order of the Purple Heart is composed of military men and women who received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered in combat. Although membership is restricted to those wounded in combat, the organization supports all veterans and their families through nation-wide programs organized by Chapters and National Service Officers.
On April 12, 2012, the State of California became the first state to designate itself a "Purple Heart State", in recognition of the sacrifices of California veterans, especially those who were wounded or killed in the line of duty. The City of Long Beach is home to more than 21,000 veterans, and is one of the largest veteran populations in the State of California.
We have received a request" from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Long Beach Chapter 210, a nationally chartered nonprofit that works in helping combat wounded veterans to proclaim Long Beach a "Purple Heart City."
