TITLE
Recommendation to recognize 13 exceptional students from the Long Beach Unified School District that will be competing in the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO).
DISCUSSION
The Long Beach branch ofthe National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has selected 13 students from the Long Beach Unified School District to compete in the national ACT -SO competition at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. This is the 30th Anniversary of the ACT-SO program.
ACT -SO is a yearlong enrichment program designed to recruit, stimulate, improve and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students. The ACT -SO program centers around the dedication and commitment of community volunteers and business leaders who serve as mentors and coaches to promote academic and artistic excellence among African-American students. There are 25 categories of competition in the sciences, humanities, perfonning and visual arts.
