TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute all necessary documents including any necessary subsequent amendments, with the Marathon Petroleum Foundation, Inc., to receive and expend grant funding up to $10,000 from the Community Investment Grant Program, for the period of January 3, 2022 to December 31, 2022; and
Increase appropriations in the General Grants Fund Group in the Police Department by $10,000, offset by grant revenue. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) was awarded a Community Investment Grant from the Marathon Petroleum Foundation, Inc. (Marathon), in the amount of $10,000. The grant will be used to establish of a Peer Support Program (PSP) for LBPD personnel. The PSP will allow all LBPD members the opportunity to receive emotional support in times of professional, personal stress or crisis from trained peer supporters under the guidance of a mental health professional. The Peer Supporters will help reduce the impact of cumulative stress and trauma on their colleagues by providing awareness, education, and confidential peer support.
A career in law enforcement ranks among the most stressful careers in the United States. The LBPD is among the growing number of law enforcement agencies embracing the benefits of specialized programs focusing on mental health and wellness for its personnel. Since 2019, the LBPD has been utilizing the services of the Counseling Team International (TCTI) for critical incident support and counseling services for its public safety personnel. The grant will be used to send a cadre of volunteer Peer Supporters to Basic and Advanced Peer Counselor trainings at TCTI. These PSP volunteers will in turn host “in-house” trainings to provide regular assistance to their colleagues and share knowledge and experiences.
