TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney draft a resolution in support of Long Beach's proposal to serve as the new location for the corporate headquarters and sporting facilities for Special Olympics Southern California and return to the City Council for approval no later than December 12, 2006.

DISCUSSION
Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) has released a Request for Proposals to relocate its corporate headquarters and sporting facilities from its current location in Culver City.

SOSC provides services to more than 10,000 athletes with the assistance of approximately 12,000 volunteers throughout the 11 counties of Southern California.

Long Beach would be an ideal location for the new corporate headquarters.
California State University, Long Beach currently serves as host to 1,500 athletes and 3,000 volunteers each year at the Summer Games for the Special Olympics Southern California.

Long Beach is centrally located for the SOSC area, which stretches from San Luis Obispo to San Diego. Long Beach is currently home to an Area Program . office, which is also a goal of the relocation effort.

A resolution from the City Council in support of SOSC relocating its headquarters to Long Beach will strengthen the City's proposal to serve as the new corporate headquarters.

The proposals are due to SOSC by December 19, 2006, with an anticipated announcement of the headquarters relocation in June 2007.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,
