DISCUSSION
The San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy (RMC) is a conservancy of the California Resources Agency whose mission is to preserve open space and habitat in order to provide for low-impact recreation and educational uses,
wildlife habitat restoration and protection, and watershed improvements within the San Gabriel and Los Angeles River watersheds. In service of its mission, the RMC has created an evolving Open Space Plan and grant program to distribute and administer bond funds in accordance with the plan. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (Department) regularly submits projects to the RMC for inclusion in their Open
Space Plan. Recently, the Department received grant award notification that the Golden Shore Marine Reserve/Los Angeles River Interpretive Project was selected for incorporation into the
RMC’s Open Space Plan. The grant will provide funding for interpretive signage, landscape improvements, and fencing along the southerly terminus of the Los Angeles River - Rio Hondo Bikeway (LARIO) Trail (Exhibit 1). Signage will help identify the poorly marked southern entrance to the LARIO Trail. In addition, interpretive signage will be installed to inform visitors of the importance and function of the Los Angeles River watershed, the impacts on the Golden Shore Marine Reserve, and all other components of the ecosystem of the San Pedro Bay.
