TITLE
Recommendation to request City Manager to provide an update to City Council within sixty (60) days on the Police Department's Operation Safe Passage program.
DISCUSSION
The Long Beach Police Department has implemented Operation Safe Passage to help foster a safe environment for students as they are going to and from school in our City.
School resource officers, the full-time police officers on the city's high school campuses, work with additional police support, school staff and parents to focus on the safety of students during the periods before and after school.
At Jordan High School, many parents have volunteered and received training from the Long Beach Police Department to supplement the work of school staff in the mornings and afternoons.
At the "Long Beach - One City" Community Forum and Resource Fair held in Bixby Knolls on January 27, some of the students on the youth panel expressed concerns about the potential for problems before and after school hours.
The Police Department has done a tremendous job in making the safety of our children and our school campuses a priority.
I would like to request an update to the Council on the Operation Safe Passage program to discuss how this program has made an impact on the safety of our students coming to and from school and how the community can assist in continuing to ensure a safer environment for our children.
