TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager to receive the 2005-2006 funding allocation of $40,000 from the South Bay Center for Counseling to provide Youth Employment Services and to execute any required documents in connection with the foregoing. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
The Youth Opportunity Center (YOC) of the Department's Workforce Development Bureau provides a wide range of developmental services for young people, ranging in
age from 16 to 24. Services include employment preparation, resume writing assistance, interviewing skills practice, and job referrals to employers. Support for appropriate clothing, General Education Diploma (GED) attainment, bus passes, and drug and/or gang prevention is also provided for those in need.
The YOC's Hire-A-Youth Program targets employment services and provides early work experiences. The South Bay Center for Counseling (Center) has partially funded the Hire-A-Youth Program as part of their direct services contract with Los Angeles County over the past several years. Because of the YOC's success in operating the Hire-AYouth Program, the City has received notification of an award of $40,000 from the
Center to continue providing youth services from August 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006.
Funds from the new award help pay internship stipends for participating youth to gain work experience at businesses throughout Long Beach.
This letter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Everett L. Glenn on August 11, 2005, and Budget Management Officer David Wodynski on August 31,2005.
