Recommendation to adopt resolution authorizing the temporary closure of certain streets, alleys, walkways, The Promenade, and the Downtown Shoreline bike path, as needed in connection with the 2022 Grand Prix of Long Beach construction and race activity, between February 17, 2022 and April 30, 2022. DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to authorize the temporary closure of certain streets, alleys, walkways, The Promenade, and the Downtown Shoreline bike path in connection with the 2022 Grand Prix of Long Beach per the proposed schedule. Closures will begin on February 17, 2022 and extend through April 30, 2022. These closures are only enacted as needed for construction or race activity.
Between April 8, 2022 and April 10, 2022, the 47th Annual Grand Prix will be held on the streets of Long Beach. This event will attract over 180,000 people to the City of Long Beach (City) and receive national and international media coverage. The Promenade, and the Downtown Shoreline bike path will be closed so the race may be held on City streets. The bike path, beginning at Seaside Way and Chestnut Place, and continuing to a point approximately 400 feet east of the beach parking, must be closed during the race to allow fire trucks and medical vehicles continual access to the back side of the bleachers situated on the north and south sides of Shoreline Drive. Fire, Energy Resources, Water, Police, Public Works, Financial Management, Development Services, Health and Human Services, and Parks, Recreation and Marine Departments, as well as Long Beach Transit, have reviewed the proposed schedule.
Traffic management and signage plans will be forwarded by the Association to newspapers serving the greater Long Beach area asking for their cooperation to publicize these plans as a public service during the weeks prior to the race.
