TITLE
Recommendation to adopt resolution authorizing the temporary closure of certain streets, alleys, the Promenade, and the downtown shoreline bike path in connection with the 2006 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. (District 2)
DISCUSSION
On April 7, 8, and 9, 2006, the 32nd Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach will be held on the streets of Long Beach. This event will attract over 300,000 people to the city and receive national and international media coverage. In order to allow for the staging of this event, a resolution has been prepared that provides for the temporary closure of certain streets, alleys, walkways, the Promenade, and the downtown shoreline bike path so that the race may be held on city streets.
As has been the case for the last 32 years, the race will not use Ocean Blvd., leaving it open to both eastbound and westbound traffic at all times. The proposed schedule included in the attached resolution for temporary closure of certain streets, alleys, walkways, the Promenade, and downtown shoreline bike path is the same as last year.
The bike path, beginning at Seaside Way and Chestnut Place and continuing to a point approximately 400 feet east of beach parking, must be closed during the race to allow fire trucks and medical vehicles continual access to the back side of the bleachers situated on the north and south sides of Shoreline Drive.
The Departments of Fire, Gas and Oil, Water, Police, Public Works, and Parks, Recreation and Marine, as well as Long Beach Transit, have reviewed this schedule.
Traffic management and signage plans will be forwarded to newspapers serving the greater Long Beach area asking for their cooperation to publicize these plans, as a public service during the weeks before the race.
