TITLE
Recommendation to increase appropriations in the Capital Projects Fund (CP) in the Department of Public Works (PW) by $240,000 for Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Main Laboratory Remodel project to improve laboratory testing capabilities for response to a bioterrorist incident. (District 5)
DISCUSSION
On October 21,2003, City Council authorized an agreement between the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC). An award of $332,587 was accepted to fund improvements at the Public Health Main Laboratory and purchase distance learning equipment for training services. An
appropriation increase in the Health Fund (SR 130) was authorized on that date. DHHS has transferred a portion of those grant funds to the Department of Public Works to
support the design and construction of the public health laboratory improvements. Remodeling and rearranging the existing laboratory space will accommodate the equipment and testing that would be needed to identify a broader range of biological agents, should a bioterrorist incident arise.
