TITLE

Recommendation to request City Manager to report on the City of Long Beach's efforts around civic engagement through volunteerism including the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance inspiring a month of community and neighborhood service projects culminating on Saturday, October 22nd Make a Difference Day.

DISCUSSION

In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under bipartisan federal law, and for more than two decades, Points of Light has joined with USA TODAY to partner on Make a Difference Day, the largest national day of community service that occurs on the fourth Saturday of October every year.

Volunteerism is universal and is an important bridge between citizens and govemment, one that is imperative to finding solutions for pressing problems facing our communities. The City of Long Beach is committed to advancing innovative programs and services designed to improve our neighborhoods and partnering with established corporations and nonprofit organizations that have the capacity to align people, resources and needs to make a meaningful difference locally is one such example.

It is respectfully requested that the City Manager provide an update on volunteer recruitment strategies, local volunteer service opportunities and citywide projects related to the aforementioned and highlight existing neighborhood services and organizations that playa key role in building social capital, a sense of shared purpose and collective action.
