TITLE
Recommendation to request City Manager to prepare comments in response to the draft Environmental Impact Report for the proposed Los Angeles Unified School District High School and agendize the issue for City Council consideration prior to transmittal to the Los Angeles Unified School District.
DISCUSSION
The 10s Angeles Unified School District is proposing to build a new high school on a 14-acre parcel in the City of Long Beach, located at the northwest intersection of Carson Street and Santa Fe Avenue.
This site is within the Los Angeles Unified School District's boundaries, however it is an industrial zone and has General Plan designations for the City of Long Beach. The proposed school would serve approximately 2,000 students from the City of Carson, yet it will have a significant impact on the City of Long Beach.
Among the concerns about this proposed high school are the impacts on our police and fire services, the siting of a high school in an industrial area, the loss of available industrial property that could support trade and technology related job production, and the impact on traffic and parking, as there is currently not any proposed on-site parking for students.
City staff has been communicating the City's concerns to LAUSD officials. The City will have an opportunity to officially comment on the proposed project this fall when LAUSD is expected to release the Draft Environmental Impact Report.
SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
Respectfully Submitted,
COUNCILWOMAN RAE GABELICH
