DISCUSSION
On March 20, 2012, the City Council authorized the execution of Student Field Placement Agreement No. 32646 (Agreement) with the Trustees of the California State University, on behalf of California State University Long Beach (CSULB), for the facilitation of internships through the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM), at the Long Beach Senior Center (Senior Center), located at 1150 East 4th Street. The Agreement expires on December 31, 2014, and CSULB has requested a two-year extension. The recommended action would authorize the City Manager to execute a First Amendment to the Agreement, which would extend it through December 31, 2016.

For the past two years, the Senior Center has been a placement site for CSULB Department of Family and Consumer Sciences students (student interns). The student interns provide non-compensated service at the Senior Center’s Information, Referral and Assistance Office, where they assist with general office administration and patron support, in exchange for credit toward CSULB’s internship requirement. This is one of several internship programs administered by PRM at the Senior Center, and it provides a great benefit to PRM and the community it serves.

PRM will continue to directly supervise each student intern and submit timecards and performance reports to CSULB. CSULB will continue its responsibility of providing all student orientations and placements, as well as payment of all applicable salaries/benefits, while the student interns are interning at the Senior Center.
